What Teaching Fractions Taught Me About Transformation

You might be wondering: what does teaching a six-year-old about fractions have to do with holistic health and wellness?

Everything.

When the Old Way Doesn't Work

I watched my older boys struggle with fractions. The frustration in their eyes, the confusion, the way something that seemed simple on paper became a wall they couldn't climb over. As a mother and educator in our homeschool journey, I knew I needed to do something different when my youngest son's time came.

My six-year-old loves math. His eyes light up when he sees numbers, when he discovers patterns, when something clicks into place. I didn't want to wait until he was older and potentially struggling. I wanted to introduce fractions early, but more importantly, I wanted to introduce them in a way that made sense to him.

Meeting Him Where He Was

Here's what I discovered: he responded to vibrant colors. He responded to visuals—bars and circles broken up into all the beautiful possibilities of fractions. And here's the magic: they were magnetized. Half wasn't just a concept written as 1/2. It was a circle, bright and bold, split into two equal magnetic pieces he could physically connect and pull apart.

Quarters weren't just numbers—they were a bar divided into four colorful magnetic sections he could see, touch, manipulate, and understand with his hands.

The breakthrough wasn't in the math itself. It was in finding his language.

The Lesson That Changed Everything

Homeschooling my children has taught me so much about how we communicate. It's shown me that there's rarely one right way to reach someone. What works for one person may completely miss another. What clicks for one child might confuse their sibling.

Isn't this exactly what I do in my wellness practice?

When I work with healthcare professionals, leaders and caregivers at 7 Healing Waters, I'm not just offering information—I'm finding the right way to communicate healing principles that resonate with each unique person. Some clients need the science and research. Others need storytelling and metaphor. Some need visual guides, while others need to feel and experience before they can understand.

Breaking Down What Feels Overwhelming

Teaching fractions requires breaking down a whole into smaller, more manageable pieces. Transformation work requires the same approach.

When someone comes to me feeling overwhelmed by their health journey, depleted from caring for others, or disconnected from their authentic self, we don't tackle everything at once. We break it down. We look at the colorful pieces of their life—their rest, their nutrition, their emotional wellness, their spiritual connection—and we work with one fraction at a time until the whole picture becomes clear.

Just like my son seeing that four quarters make one whole circle, the people I work with begin to see how small, intentional shifts create complete transformation.

The Power of Starting Early

I chose to introduce fractions early because I didn't want my youngest to develop the same struggles his brothers faced. In wellness, we talk about this all the time—prevention, early intervention, building healthy habits before unhealthy patterns take root.

Why wait until we're burned out to address self-care? Why wait until our bodies are screaming at us to start listening? Why wait until we've lost ourselves completely to begin the journey back to authenticity?

The best time to start is always now. The best approach is always the one that meets you exactly where you are.

What This Means for You

Whether you're navigating a health challenge, supporting others while neglecting yourself, or simply feeling like something is missing, remember this: there's a way to communicate with your body, mind, and spirit that will make sense to you.

You don't have to learn the way someone else learned. You don't have to heal the way someone else healed. Your journey gets to be as unique and vibrant as those colorful fraction circles that helped my son understand what seemed impossible.

At 7 Healing Waters, we believe in meeting you where you are—with the visuals, the language, the approach that speaks to your soul. Because true wellness isn't one-size-fits-all. It's finding the pieces that work for you and building them into a beautiful, authentic whole.

A Question Worth Reflecting On

What's one complex area of your health or wellness that feels overwhelming right now? What if, instead of tackling it all at once, you broke it down into colorful, manageable pieces? Where would you start?
